Do It Yourself

Making hookah with your own hands

Having grasped hookah principle of operation and studied ancient ways of creating a hookah of anything available, I decided to make it with my own hands.

First of all it should have to be decided what to use as a retort. From the remains of my schooldays chemistry knowledge it was followed that a retort is a kind of lab equipment and there was no a slightest hint of desire in me to spend money on it. The decision was made to investigate what is being kept in my pantry. Among antic things, plates and folks I've found a remarkable prototype for the future retort. It was an old teapot

Then I became interested in what is shaft can be made of and what to use as a hose. To get some new ideas I went to a construction materials store.

The answer for the second part of this question was found quickly – my shower hose which has been in need of replacement for a long time was a perfect fit: cost-effective and aesthetically beautiful

After a long search at the same place I bought a gas cooker burner, metal sieve for a sink and a steel pipe 30 centimeters long. Also I purchased a solder stick which easily enables to joint metal surfaces. To be honest, I was especially happy with this last find because I don't get along well with a soldering iron since my childhood.

Basic preparations were completed and I was able to get straight down to the job. First of all, I started to deal with a shaft since it is the most complex part of the whole thing. To join gas burner with one of the ends of the metal pipe was an easy thing to do. It was sufficient just to make a cone at one of the edges of the pipe and to hammer it into a gas burner. This resulted in a very durable and hermetic joining.

To connect another edge of the pipe to a teapot lead was a bit more difficult.
To begin with I chiseled out a hole for the teapot handle to make it the size of the pipe.

Then I've made a couple of riffles in order to provide better adherence for the solder. It was a matter of critical importance to select a level to which a pipe should be submerged in a teapot. A mark at the base of a spout was just right.

Having placed a lead on a spot I installed the pipe. First, I sobered top of joining very meticulously with a sober stick, then I opened a lead and sobered joining underneath in the same way. Then I sanded places of sobering with a file and the shaft was finished.

In order to joint a spout with a shower hose I had to cut off a bit of a spout where the section is most correct. Then I directed a rubber hose into a spout and provided impermeability with a duck tape. Metal hose armor together with a nut which now has become no more than a decoration was placed on a spout.

After all these things are finished only touches left to be done. Having charged a retort I had to provide an impermeability of a teapot and a lead joining with help of foil. Also I should have installed a funnel made of the same material for tobacco in a gas burner. At the end I placed a metal sieve on a gas burner and my hookah became ready for usage. It takes only a overheated coal to be placed on top of the sieve

It turned out that to make a hookah with your own hands is even cheaper then to smoke it once in a cafe. All you need is:

  1. Teapot. I've found one in my pantry;
  2. Shower hose. It would be thrown away, anyway;
  3. Gas burner . 50 rubles;
  4. Steel pipe . 28 rubles;
  5. Sieve for sink . 6 rubles;
  6. Soldering stick. 60 rubles;
  7. Desire to invent which is priceless.
